Endoscope Training for Woodland Bat Surveys

Exciting opportunity to learn the basics of endoscope use when surveying trees for bats, led by Nick Underhill-Day and Dave Smith. Limited to a maximum of 10 attendees (must be paid-up HMG members). If you have your own endoscope please bring it along. Wear suitable footwear and waterproofs for damp woodland and ladder-climbing.  Please note, we may not find any bats at all, but this wood does contain a small number of previously occupied roost holes so fingers crossed!

Led by HMG's James Bisset, an introductory talk on bats and orchards will lead you around the edge of Bodenham Lake, the River Lugg, Bodenham Church and old Bodenham village listening and looking for signs of those special ‘Angels of the Night’ – bats. Loan bat detectors will be provided or BYO, along with a torch just in case! A guide to British Bats will be available to buy on the night. Pipistrelle Bat Count - Docklow
The Herefordshire Mammal Group has been invited by the owners of Hampton Mere near Docklow to conduct an exist count of Soprano
Pipistrelles; Paul and Heather think there are several hundred present. Meet at 20:45 - 21:00 to be in position for 21:10.   The property is at the end of a long track through arable fields.  Access the track from the A44 is signposted six miles east of Leominster and 5 miles west of Bromyard, south side of road (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.2105963,-2.6172412,15z?hl=en).  The grid reference is SO57725703 and nearest post code HR6 0SN.  There is parking at the front of the house and if necessary to the rear.  The proposed date is weather permitting.

Bat Trapping Event at Moccas Park - A joint event with the Worcestershire Bat Group
Moccas Park is a National Nature Reserve and one of the largest and most diverse examples of wood pasture in Britain.  There are many ancient trees which host a large variety of species.  At least 13 species of bat are recorded here and other mammals include brown hare, hedgehog and badger. In 2015, HMG had a similar event in May so it will be interesting to see whether we can track down that elusive Nathusius bat.  Parking arrangements are not yet known but entrance is at SO347428

City of Angels (of the night!)
Join James Bisset, local ‘batman’ and Herefordshire Mammal Group member, for a Bat walk’n’talk around the banks of the River Wye in Hereford City. After an introduction to these fascinating nocturnal mammals a gentle circular stroll around the Bishops Meadows/King George V fields, Castle Green and Cathedral Close will give you the chance to hear (and hopefully see)
these marvels of the night. Loan bat detectors to translate their ultrasonic calls to your hearing will be available or bring your own detector if you have one. Whole walk will be based around surfaced, public paths. All under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. NO dogs please. Meet at the Swimming Pool Car Park - KGV end of St Martin’s Avenue – look out for James’ Bat-mobile and soft toys! Finish approx. 10pm
