Adventures in North America - A talk by Lizzie Croose
Lizzie spent 3 months last winter working in the cold and snowy forests of North America with the Michigan Predator-Prey Project. Here, she assisted with research on white-tailed deer survival and the role of predation by black bear, bobcat, wolf and coyote. In this illustrated presentation, Lizzie will talk about the research she was involved with, the critters she encountered and the differences between fieldwork in the UK and the US.  Venue:  Bunch of Carrots Pub at Hampton Bishop, HR1 4JR
There will be a small charge to cover costs.

FEBRUARY 2018

Tuesday, 20 February 2018 at 19.30 (Change of Date from 1st March)
The Bats of Trinidad by Denise Foster
Venue:  Bunch of Carrots, Hampton Bishop, HR814JR
Until recently, all bats species in Trinidad were considered vermin under the Under the Conservation and Wildlife Act of 1958 which allowed an owner, occupier or their agent to hunt and destroy, without licence, any animal on the list of vermin. Five years after Trinibats started, all bat species except two have now been removed from the vermin list. The Trinibats Project was set up in 2011 to conserve the bats of Trinidad, to educate local people and to remove them from the Government vermin list. Denise Foster has been part of the UK Trinibats team since 2012 and she will be telling us about the exotic bat species encountered and about the trials and tribulations of working in the tropics. There will be a small charge to cover costs.

Bats and Roadside Mammals Transect Surveys
HMG has two sets of kit ready to carry out driven transects to increase our number of mammal records for the Mammal Atlas. The survey protocol is to drive a pre-planned transect of between 15 and 25 miles at a speed of around 15mph, starting at 30-45 minutes after sunset. The Anabat Express detector will automatically record bat passes and you will need to record any observations of live or dead wildlife encountered en-route. Whilst you have the kit you can also leave the detector out overnight in your garden to gather additional records.  Please contact David Lee via HMG is you are interested in carrying out a survey.

Bats and Swifts in Churches Project
The aim of the project is to work with churches which have bats using the interior of the building, by providing a full bat survey and also to provide the church with assistance and recommendations to alleviate some of the problems, especially where large numbers of bats are using the church.  We are also working on producing a Herefordshire Mammal Atlas for the county and this project will help boost the  number of bat records too.   This is also an ideal opportunity for members and to get experience with surveying traditional buildings, carrying out detector surveys and dealing with the public in an area which could be a sensitive issue.    There is a separate interest group for this project and not all church surveys will be advertised in the normal way, as numbers need to be limited.  If you would like to register your interest contact Denise Foster through HMG

Herefordshire Woodlands Bat Project
We are currently surveying both plantation and non-plantation woodlands, using both bat detector, trapping and radio-tracking, which will continue until further notice. If you would like to register your interest in being involved in any of this work.  A total of 4 bats will be tagged and radio-tracked back to natural roosts 2018.  If you are interested in this event and would like to be involved please contact Denise Foster, HMG.

Herefordshire Mammal Atlas (Bats)
We are continuing to survey non-woodland sites such as water bodies, disused railway tunnels, caves, limekilns around Herefordshire using bat detectors and trapping techniques collecting records and looking for rare species of bat, such as the greater horseshoe, Alcathoe and Nathusius' pipistrelle.  If you would like to register your interest in being involved in any of this work contact Denise Foster, HMG

Water Shrew Presence/Absence Surveying Project
The aim of the survey is to target the areas of the county which currently hold no records for Water Shrew. These areas will incorporate the River Frome and it’s tributaries to the North-East and the River Dore and it’s tributaries to the South-West. The survey will follow the same protocol as the National Water Shrew Survey. If you want to get involved with this exciting new project contact Dave Smith via HMG.
